Canada Day Lifestyle Engagement Photo Session: Melinda + Alex

Melinda and Alex asked if I'd be open to photographing their Lifestyle Engagement Session on Canada Day. I thought to myself: What a great way for a couple to celebrate Canada's birthday, so I happily agreed.

We did an urban shoot throughout some of Toronto's downtown core, and finished off at one of the hippest spots in the city: the Distillery District

Melinda and Alex, you were a pleasure to photograph. Spending the day with you was a lot of fun, and I loved how open you were to all my ideas throughout the day. Your Engagement coffee table book is going to be a stunner. Following are just a few highlights from today:

Wedding Celebration: Natasha and Marcelo

What a day: Beautiful, sunny, and very hot! Full of lovely people with happy smiles and lots of laughter. Yesterday was Natasha's and Marcelo's Wedding Celebration, and it was awesome.

Thank you for making me feel so welcome. It was a pleasure photographing you and your family / friends.

Here are just a few highlights. I hope you enjoy them.

Michael Jackson

The world lost a misunderstood genius and musical entertainer yesterday with the passing of Michael Jackson.

On the verge of a 50 concert comeback to erase debt, he was reported to be rehearsing with a broken vertebrae and broken leg. He collapsed in front of the Los Angeles home he was renting.

While at MuchMoreMusic, I produced a documentary on Michael Jackson, and dug deep in my research with the hours of archival material I uncovered. Such a sad life, all starting with a tyrannical father.

He will be missed. His music and taped performances will live forever.

Highlights: Relay for Life - Scarborough

It was impressed upon me early on during this weekend's Relay for Life the difference in personality, compared to last weekend's event. Toronto's multiculturalism really shone through. It's poignant to witness people of diverse backgrounds working as a team - in one location - all night long, full of hope. It's an evening where the human spirit shines.

Following are just a few highlights. I hope you enjoy them.

Relay for Life: Scarborough

Friday, June 19th I'll be photographing again for the Canadian Cancer Society. If you're participating in the Scarborough Relay for Life, come say "Hello". I'll capture an image of you!

The final tally isn't yet in for the Central Toronto Relay for Life, but as of today the event has raised close to $250,000 for cancer research! Fantastic.

Albums and Coffee Table Books: Original Designs, FAST Delivery

For our lovely wedding couples, we make it a policy to design and deliver all of our albums and coffee table books quickly. By that we mean FAST FAST FAST!

As your photographer I don't believe you should wait. We make it a policy to have your design done in 2 weeks or less. Sometimes in a week. Which means you can have a coffee table book in your hot little hands in as little as two and a half weeks.

As your photographer, I personally enhance the images, and do the design and layout of your books and albums. Every design is custom and unique. I photographed you, so it doesn't make sense to me to have someone else do it. By the time you've made it to be in front of my cameras we've typically had the opportunity to spend some time together, and I now know what is important to you.

Following are just a few recent cover designs.

Sneak Peek: Relay for Life - Central Toronto

Last night I photographed the Central Toronto Relay for Life for the Canadian Cancer Society. The Society allows me to be creative with how I want to capture the story of the event. The challenge, is that with many subplots to the main story, there are dozens of stories. I capture images which can be used for marketing. When I'm shooting I often see moments that have more than one story, so I know that images I capture can possibly be used for multiple purposes or campaigns.

If you attended last night's event (actually it went until about 7am this morning), we're offering a visual keepsake of the event. For a small donation you may download a web-resolution version of any image you see here. Simply click on the image you want. We'll be offering some of these and other images as Fine-Art Prints, so feel free to call the studio for further details.

Above: This idea came to me while I was photographing. Who knows? You may see it become part of the Society's marketing campaign.

Above: Everyone at the Relay for Life has similar reasons for being there. This image reflects a variety of emotions in its subjects: resolve and determination, hope, happiness and strength. I love how they are basked in early evening sunshine.

Above: People make their way around the track lap after lap usually with a combination of running, walking, and some via wheelchair. In the last few minutes of the luminary ceremony, I snuck away and captured this image of a lone man running past the Hope bleachers.

Above: There are literally hundreds of luminaries around the circumference of the track surrounded by healthy green grass, which in its own right represents life and the earth.

Above: Many luminaries have hand-written messages. The writer of this message shares humour with the intended recipient.

Above: There are people of many diverse cultures in attendance. Cancer doesn't show prejudice. I love how this luminary is nestled in the grass with team tents in the background.

Above: The love of two siblings shines through in this message. Neighbouring luminaries are always close by because the track can barely contain all of them.

Above: I love how the young woman has a heart tattooed to her cheek, symbolizing Love. It makes for the perfect companion to Hope in the background, where a couple stand, perhaps seeking hope or offering it to those in need. Captured just before midnight.

Angelic :: Photosensitive :: Relay for Life

Regina, Canada: ANGELIC opened as part of Photosensitive's Cancer Connections Exhibit this week to lots of media coverage - both print (see below) and TV. Regina is the first city in '09 the exhibit will show in as it travels Canada-wide until landing in our Nation's Capital Spring 2010. The exhibit opened last year in Toronto.

I spoke with Photosensitive today. They told me Angelic looks ethereal in the exhibit. Nice.  S W E  E T .

We're selling Angelic fine-art prints on our image archive website to help support cancer research. If you haven't seen Angelic yet, take a look. It's probably not what you're expecting. If you'd like a one-of-a-kind piece of art for your wall, please consider purchasing a print. It's for a great cause.

I'll be photographing at two Canadian Cancer Society's Relay for Life events over the next two weeks:

Toronto Central
Friday June 12, 2009
Forest Hill Memorial Park
340 Chaplin Crescent

Scarborough
Friday June 19, 2009
Birchmount Stadium
93 Birchmount Rd.

Drop by and say Hello. I'll capture an image of you.

A man hurrying through Regina's Victoria Park glances at 500 black-and-white photos of people touched by cancer. He stops to look and read the accompanying stories.

He kneels on the grass and cries.

Such is the impact of Cancer Connections, a national photo exhibition that officially launches its 2009 tour in Regina today. It features the faces of young and old, known and unknown Canadians with a common foe: cancer.

Cassandra Fisher saw the exhibit being set up Monday, so she took a closer look Tuesday morning.

"This is inspirational," she said. "All of these people are sharing their stories and some of them are still with us and they're hopeful. I've had people in my family who have cancer and that's all you can do -- have hope."

Engagement Photo Session: Liz and Kelvin

Tottenham Au: Engagement BLOG - Images by Dean Oros

This morning Liz, Kelvin and myself headed out to the University of Toronto for their Engagement Photo Session.

With its striking architecture, we had a lot to work with visually. Liz and Kelvin: you were really wonderful today. It was a pleasure photographing you, and I'm looking forward to photographing your Wedding Day this summer.

Your Coffee Table Book is going to look fantastic. I've a lot of ideas of what I want to do!

If Liz and Kelvin have provided you with the details to access their Gallery Collection on our Client Access Website, the images above, and more, are available for you to enjoy. Cheers.

Serious Business!

Thank you to Daniel, René and Chris for a fun corporate shoot yesterday. After we wrapped, we continued shooting. As you can see from the image below, it was serious business!

Urban Images: Stock

Over the weekend, I made the decision to shoot once a week just for myself. I placed one criteria on it: that I'd try to capture at least one image suitable for our growing Stock Image Archive.

So on Saturday I grabbed a camera and a couple of lenses, and off to Queen Street West I went. These images are part of our ongoing "Urban Images" series.

If you enjoy any of these images, you can buy them for yourself or as a gift, either as a custom print or as a web-version for your personal blog. And, we're making these images available for commercial use, too. I know, we're nice that way.

Simply click on the image you want. Not only will you be purchasing a one-of-a-kind photograph, you'll be supporting the studio.

Thank you.

Update: Spring Tweet Photo Giveaway Contest

We're going to draw the winner by this Wednesday. Then, we're going to contact the winner who will have up to one week to accept their prize. If we don't hear from the winner within one week, we'll draw another winner, and so on. I don't expect anyone to not accept their prize, but you never know... maybe someone took an extended worldwide expedition and they'll be gone for a year.

To be fair, we aren't going to announce the winner's name until they have accepted the prize.

Stay tuned. Thanks for your patience.

PhotoSensitive National Exhibition Dates

PhotoSensitive has released touring dates for the 2009 - 2010 segment of the Cancer Connections Canada-wide Exhibition. Angelic, which we shot last year, is featured as part of the exhibit.

Cancer Connections had its national launch May 20, 2008 in Toronto, Ontario where it showed for three weeks. The show then exhibited in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Montreal (Quebec).

The exhibit returns for 2009, launching at Victoria Park, Regina, Saskatchewan, at 12.30pm on Wednesday June 10. The exhibition will be showing there until June 28.

You are all cordially invited to the launch ceremony, though I realize that most of you are more than a bus ride from Regina and may not be able to make it. Not to worry, Cancer Connections will be continuing its journey and coming to a city (fairly) close to you over the next 12 months.

July 15 marks the launch of Cancer Connections at the Forks in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where it will be showing until August 5.

Other cities to be visited this year are:

  1. King Square, St John, New Brunswick, August 19 - September 3.
  2. Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, September 10 - 27.
  3. St John's Newfoundland (venue to be confirmed) October 6 - 25.

In 2010, the exhibit will be traveling to Vancouver, British Columbia; Calgary, Alberta; and Ottawa, Ontario.

Wedding-Story Celebration: Sokha & Steve

Yesterday was Sokha and Steve's Wedding Day! And what a day it was; full of laughter, family, friends, and rushing around. I had quite a fun time with the bride and the girls as they prepared themselves for the day's festivities. Sokha's Mom, Hieng, made me laugh on more than one occasion! The entire day was lovely.

Thank you to everyone involved, for making me feel so welcome throughout the day. Here are just a few of my favourite images. If Sokha and Steve have provided you with registration details to gain access to their Gallery Collection, you'll be able to download these images now while the remaining images are being prepared.

Also, if you'd like to embed this slideshow into your own blog or personal website, you can! It's easy to do: simply click on the bottom-right arrow and the code will pop up. Simply copy and paste.

Thanks, and I hope you enjoy this sneak peek.
